The children have been reading our class books and taking Accelerated Reader (A.R.) book quizzes daily. We will take part in our first "Prize Patrol" this coming week. Students are working on real and nonsense words, blending words, beginning and ending sounds of words in "Heggerty." Students have taken their Unit 1 "Fundations" test on writing their alphabet in lower case letters and being able to write letters to match their letter sounds. We have been working on CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words in Unit 2 of "Fundations" and writing simple sentences. We have begun talking about capitalizing the first letter of the first word in a sentence, leaving spaces between words, and writing punctuation at the end of their sentence (we are just working on "period" at this point in time). In Guided Reading Centers, the children are reading leveled books with me, forming simple sentences and picture puzzles, putting CVC words together with short vowel sounds and writing the CVC words, listening to / reading / answering questions about "RAZ Kids" stories, "ABC Ya," "Brainpop Jr. - Reading and Writing," and they have practiced writing capital and lower case "A, B, C, D, and E" with accommodating words that have those letters within them. We had our hearing and vision checked at school last Monday morning.
Students have been taking part in Calendar / Weather / Number of Days in School, "Everyday Math" quick daily class lessons on the promethium board, Math Centers (workbook pages with Mrs. Z, number recognition / following directions / color penguin pages, using tally marks to represent numbers with "Paper Rock Scissors" activity, rolling dice to add two numbers together to create sums & coloring in a graph to match their answers, "Prodigy" on our chrome books and "Everyday Math" chrome book activities related to our daily lessons. The children took part in a shadows Science experiment using flashlights, paper gnomes, and paper shadow stations. The kiddos practiced their writing skills in Lucy Calkins' writing curriculum to practice writing first and final drafts with illustrations about their Science experiments.
The students started their Unit 1 in Social Studies to learn about rules, laws, respect and responsibility, and good choices on the class promethium board. We completed a "Scholastic News" magazine as a class. We watched the story "We're Not Scared, We're Prepared" on the promethium board and a power point on our school's A.L.I.C.E. plan. The students and I practiced for our A.L.I.C.E. all-school drill twice that will be happening this coming Thursday morning. Don't forget that online "Scholastic" book orders are due by this Wednesday.
Have a wonderful week! Sincerely, Mrs. Zimmermann
