This coming week we will be starting Unit 9 in Fundations and be introduced to new sight words, trick words, unit words, and sentences. Students will be practicing blends, suffix s, digraphs, silent (magic) e, long e sound (ee, ea, and ey) in Heggerty and Guided Reading Centers. I will continue reading the students Speed Racer and the Mammoth Car during Teacher Led Reading. Students completed their leprechauns and their St. Patrick's Day stories last week. They are hanging up in the hallway outside of the classroom.
We started Unit 7 in Math last Thursday. We will continue learning about number families, time, addition, and subtraction in our Everyday Math group lessons and Math Centers. Students will continue Unit 4 of Lucy Calkins' Writing curriculum. We are writing about characters, setting, problems, and solutions.
The children will document chick growth inside their eggs in their daily chick journals. The chicks are almost full grown inside their eggs and should start pipping, creating a hole (air cell) to start breathing oxygen, and hatch from their eggs in the next week. The kids and I can't wait! :) We will also watch this week's new Mystery Doug Science video.
We will continue through our Geography Unit in Social Studies by learning about different bodies of water (lakes, ponds, rivers, oceans, and glaciers). Students will keep learning about Habit 6 "Synergize" (working together as a team) in "Leader in Me" and will learn about working together in our last lesson of "Second Step." We will have our second to last Travel Trunks this Tuesday, learning all about Illinois.
Have a great week and a wonderful St. Patrick's Day! Sincerely, Mrs. Julie McGraw Zimmermann
