I'm getting ready to take our brooder box to school and get it all set up for our chicks being born in the next couple of days. Today or tomorrow, they should start doing their internal pips and break holes into their air cells (egg shell) and breathe oxygen for the first time. We are so excited!!!! The chicks will go home with farmers this Thursday and Friday. Thanks, chicks! It's been fun learning about you!!!!
This week we are also working on our next weekly lessons of Heggerty and finishing our Teacher Led Reading chapter book, Speed Racer. Students will be completing their Fundations lessons in Unit 9 and taking their Unit 9 test. We will be learning about the sound that "oi" and "oy" make in words in our reading centers and gaining more reading practice and experiences. The students will have Prize Patrol to celebrate their gains on their A.R. quizzes they've take the last couple of weeks. Students need to return their completed third reading logs to complete their fourth reading log on our Homer's Reading Program. All reading logs will be due on Monday, April 1st, when we return from Spring Break. The children will keep practicing their writing skills in their spiral notebooks in our Lucy Calkins' lessons.
The children will complete Unit 7 in Math and take their Post Test 7. We have been working on telling time and math fact families in addition and subtraction. Students will finish and take home their chick journals and watch a Mystery Doug Science video. We will be observing, petting, and holding the chicks this week after they have had a chance to dry off, get fluffy, get some rest, eat some food, and drink some water. In Social Studies, we will complete more Scholastic News magazines teaching us about our world. We will also continue learning about Geography. Students will continue to learn about being good leaders as we study the 6th Habit in "Leader in Me."
Remember: This Friday, students will be dismissed from school at 2:15 p.m. (Walkers) and 2:30 p.m. (Bus Riders) to begin their Spring Break! Have a relaxing break! See you back again on April 1st!
