I hope you all had a nice Easter Break and holiday with your families and friends. I unfortunately caught the flu and have had it all break, so much of break has been spent sleeping and resting. My hubby was working much of the break on a customer's boat, so hopefully he won't catch it. XO I hope you all are staying healthy and happy. The weather has been beautiful, so it has been nice to sit out on the deck at times enjoying the soft, cool breeze and sunshine.
This week in Heggerty the children will continue working on letters and their sounds, forming real and nonsense words, breaking words down by syllables and sounds, counting sounds and syllables in words, and creating new words by taking away or adding new consonants, blends, or digraphs. We will be starting Unit 11 in Fundations. We will review sounds, old unit and trick words, cover new unit and trick words, practice writing sentences correctly, and be introduced to weekly sight words that hang up on our classroom wall. In Guided Reading, I have changed all of the reading groups / names and book levels your children are working on. I am so proud of the children and all of the growth they have made this school year. Please keep reading with them daily at home at least twenty to thirty minutes and talking about what they have read to check for understanding. Children will also work on writing and reading in their other Guided Reading Centers via games, activities, and chromebook sites ("RAZ Kids" and "ABC Mouse").
We will continue our free writing practice in Lucy Calkins' lessons in our spiral notebooks by continuing working on our book series; the children are keeping the same character (s) and just changing the setting and plot. Please check with your child to see if he or she needs a new spiral notebook for writing. I have been donating some spiral notebooks to children, as many are filling their notebooks up. Thanks! :) In Math, we will begin Unit 9 in which we will continue working on measurement and we will dive into coins and money. We will complete lessons on the promethium board as a class and then break into our new math groups that I have put students in and work with me on math lessons, complete individual activities carrying over on the lessons we are working on, games to continue gaining experiences in their math skills, and chrome books to work on money and counting skills on IXL.
Students will take part in daily recess, lunch, snack, and p.e. times, along with their specials: Music, Library, and Computers. They will not have Art this week, since we will not have a "D" Day this week, due to the shortened week. However, Miss Gleason will be having the CPS Art Show on Wednesday, April 24 in the evening! Come and check out your child's amazing art pieces. They have been working so hard!!! :) In Social Studies, the children will continue learning about America through our S.S. curriculum as a whole class on our promethium board, individually / small groups / whole class in "Scholastic News," and talking about how we can make good choices as leaders through communication and behaviors within ourselves and towards others in "Second Step" and "Leader in Me." Science will further teach us about our planet Earth and how old it is in our weekly Mystery Doug Science video lesson. We will also do our next experiment in our Science curriculum on our promethium board as a class and in hands-on activities in small groups in our classroom.
I hope you all have a great week! Take Care, Mrs. Julie Zimmermann
