Happy Holidays, All!
The children completed all of their Heggerty and Fundations this past week. We took our Unit 6 Fundations test yesterday. I read the children various holiday stories during Teacher Led Reading Time. We participated in Guided Reading Centers and rotations to practice our reading and writing skills.
We completed Calendar / Weather / Counting up to 100 School Days activities, numbers / addition / subtraction review in Math Centers, and the children took their Mid Year Math Assessment. We practiced our writing skills in Lucy Calkins lessons, learned more about light and sounds in Science, and talked about producers, consumers, and demand and supply in Social Studies.
The students participated in our all-school "St. Jude Fundraiser" and enjoyed hot cocoas from the "Faire Coffee Truck." The children received their holiday gifts from me and finished creating and wrapping their family holiday gifts yesterday. The kids were so excited to get letters from Santa's elves yesterday afternoon!
This coming week will be full of dress up days, learning, fun activities, First Grade rotations, an all-school "Leader in Me" assembly, and our class Christmas party. We will be dismissing at 2:15 p.m. (Walkers) and 2:30 p.m. (Bus Riders) on Friday to begin our Winter Break. Have an amazing holiday break and I'll see you in 2020!
Love, Mrs. Julie Zimmermann
Hello and Happy Holiday Season, First Grade Families!
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones and are having fun preparing for these next few weeks of learning and holiday fun! The children have been listening to me read them different holiday stories each day, practiced forming words through movement and sound, and written sounds / words / sentences in Unit 6 of "Fundations." We will be taking a test on Unit 6 this coming week! The children have been reading leveled books and taking part in word work, various opportunities with literature, and writing experiences during Guided Reading Centers.
We took the Unit 4 Cumulative Math Test last week and will take the Mid Year Math Assessment this coming week. Students have been reviewing their number, counting, sequencing, measuring, building, and addition skills during Math Centers this past week. The kids wrote first and second drafts of their letters to Santa. The letters have been mailed off, and we are waiting to hear replies from Santa or his elves in the next couple of weeks. Students started writing "Table of Contents" pages for their nonfiction stories they are writing in their spiral notebooks. The children had to come up with titles and page numbers for each of their chapters they are writing.
Students continue to take part in their weekly Specials classes: Art, P.E., Music, Computers, and Library. We have Art every Monday, P.E. every day, Music every Monday and Wednesday, Computers every Friday, and Library every Thursday. The children learned about why we have windows in one of our Science lessons last week, and we watched a Mystery Doug Science video. Students completed a "Scholastic News" magazine on gingerbread. We learned about compassion in a Second Step lesson with snail and puppy, started learning about "Think Win-Win" in "Leader in Me," and students learned about wants and needs in our Social Studies "Economy" unit. The children voted on and created a decorated class door for the holiday all-school door decorating contest. The kids all worked together to create our Olaf door! It turned out really cute.
Have a great weekend! Mrs. Zimmermann
