I hope this finds all of you and yours having a happy and blessed day. Sorry I haven't been able to put a newsletter up on our class blog the past couple of weeks; my home laptop has been kind-of persnickety the past few weeks. :)
I am so proud of the children and how hard they have been working these past few weeks to get ready for some special activities we have coming up this week before Winter Break. We finished up Unit 4 in Math. We took Math Post Test 4, Math Cumulative Assessment, and Math Mid Year Assessment. We took the STAR Math and STAR Reading Benchmark Tests. We finished Unit 6 in Fundations and took the unit test last week. We finished our Science Unit on Light and Sound. We continue to watch short Doug Science videos each week. The students attended an assembly last week to review the first three habits in "Leader in Me." Our class continues to talk about different emotions, reading nonverbal language, and how to communicate with others in "Second Step." We are rapidly getting through our "Community Economics" unit in Social Studies by talking about money, jobs, goods and services, natural resources, wants vs. needs, producers and consumers, and saving and spending money. We practice our letters, sounds, forming words, sight words, trick words, nonsense words, sentences, writing, researching for our nonfiction stories, and reading books. We used a graphic organizer, drafted, edited, and wrote a final draft of letters to Santa Claus. Students have been taking part in Reading and Math Centers to gain more opportunities to work on our skills, we have moved to new Reading and Math Groups and continue to show growth in our skill areas. Keep up the great work!!!!! :) YEAHHHH KIDSSSS!!!
This week we will be completing our Social Studies Unit "Christmas Around the World." First Graders will rotate with their classes to all of the First Grade classrooms to learn about and complete an activity about a different country in the world. We will also continue working on our Reading, Writing, and Math skills. Students will take part in "The Grinch" activities and "The Polar Express" activities. We will also celebrate the upcoming holidays with an all-school sing along and having our class parties. Remember, Friday the children get released early for the beginning of their Winter Break. Have a wonderful and safe holiday! Take Care, Mrs. Zimmermann
Happy first day of December! The children have been practicing writing base words, sight words, trick words, writing sentences with capitals and punctuation, and suffix s in Fundations. We have been working on recognizing rhyming words, segmenting and blending, onset / median / final sounds in words, and tapping out words in Heggerty. We continue to read our class chapter book Charlotte's Web. In our daily Guided Reading Centers we have been reading books at our level with our groups and Mrs. Zimmermann, completing Christmas crossword puzzles, listening to Gingerbread Man stories on cd at the listening center, sorting items by needs vs. wants and completing a follow up activity, completing our Weekly S.S. News magazine, creating seasonal sentences from word cards, reading Gingerbread Man books, writing sight and seasonal words around the room, RAZ Kids, Brain Pop Jr. - Reading and Writing, ABC Mouse, and other writing and reading practice activities at our six Center rotations.
The kids played inside and outside this past week for Recess. Students enjoyed lunchtime and changed into their gym shoes. Students followed Lucy Calkins' writing lessons and worked on writing non fiction (informational, teachable) stories. We had "Zimmermann Coffee Shop" time (quiet research, work, and study time) and practiced using our chrome books to research what we were writing about in our nonfiction stories. We worked on Math Unit 4 lessons on our promethium board, class discussions, and throughout our Math Centers. We continue to practice addition and measuring skills in Math. Students worked on Math on IXL, as well.
In Science, we used colors instead of sounds to communicate (check out a few videos on our class Twitter page). We also watched a few Doug Mystery Science short videos about our planet. In Social Studies, we continued our "Community Economics" unit by learning about goods and services. Students also took part in Specials this past week: Music, Computers, Art, P.E., and Library. Students used a graphic organizer to come up with a letter to Santa. Students wrote their final draft of their letters to Santa. I mailed the letters and we're waiting to hear back from Santa Claus! :)
Please remember to have your child read with you at least 20 minutes a night, practice their writing skills, and work on math (number, addition, subtraction, and measuring) skills at home for extra experiences. Thanks for all you do! They are a sweet group of kids! I love my First Grade Zimmermann Family! :) Happy Saturday!
Love, Mrs. Zimmermann
