The children learned about our current and past presidents and we learned about maps and their uses in Social Studies. We worked on adding and subtracting ten with various numbers using our number grids, dice, dry erase markers, and white boards. Students started learning about telling time in Math.
The class learned about why cats "purr" and about ducks and their ducklings in Science. We worked on writing book reviews in Writing. We finished Unit 8 in Fundations and took our unit test. We continued to gain different experiences with letters, words, sentences, and literature.
Students took part in their Specials: Art, Music, Library, and P.E. We didn't have Computers this week since we have that on our "B" Days. This was a C, D, E, and A week. The kids also enjoyed Recess, Lunch, and Snack. We finished up our chapter book, The One Hundred Penny Box and started a new one, Speed Racer and The Mammoth Car.
The kids are SO excited because we set up the class incubator yesterday afternoon. We will be getting our eggs this next week and begin learning about our chicks that we will be waiting to see hatch in the next month.
Have a super weekend! Mrs. Julie Zimmermann
Last week, we learned about different types of birds' beaks and how they use their beaks to eat. The students took part in a Science experiment to compare picking up food with long, sharp beaks or wide beaks. Students also learned about penguins' life cycle in our Scholastic News activity and magazine. The children also were taught about reading a compass (North, South, East, and West). We had a class Social Skills lesson with Mrs. Arms where we listened to a story, watched a short video, talked about, and completed a follow up activity about being kind to one another and filling each other's buckets with kind words and gestures. Students started Unit 6 in Math. The children worked on IXL and Everyday Math lessons on their chrome books.
Students worked on Heggerty, Unit 8 in Fundations, and finishing our class chapter book. We began a new class book called The One Hundred Penny Box. Students worked on reading and writing skills, read A.R. books, took A.R. quizzes, and read stories on "RAZ Kids" on their chrome books. The children continued to work on learning about Geography by learning about different land formations (mountains, hills, plains, valleys, and plateaus). The kids started writing book reviews in their Lucy Calkins' writing lessons. The children had a fun time at their class Valentine Party last Thursday. I hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day.
This week we will continue to work on our reading, writing, math, science, and social studies curriculums and experiences. Remember, tomorrow we do not have school due to Presidents' Day. Have a great week! Mrs. Zimmermann
I hope you are all having a great weekend and have a wonderful Valentine's Day! Tomorrow, we are starting our Third Trimester. It's hard to believe we are in the last Trimester of the school year. This year has flown!
The students will be continuing our letter, sound, word, sentence, and paragraph recognition and writing in Heggerty, Fundations, and Lucy Calkins. Students have been listening to me read during Teacher Led Reading to the book Dragon Slayers' Academy: The New Kid at School.
Students have been working on blends, base words, number of sounds in words, and consonants in Heggerty. We will start Unit 8 in Fundations to continue working on our foundation in writing skills and abilities with letters, trick words, unit words, sight words, and writing complete sentences. In Fundations, we have been practicing writing a capital letter in the beginning of each sentence, capitalizing the first letter in a person's name, using correct spacing of words, spelling, writing neatly and correctly forming letters, and putting punctuation at the end of each sentence. In Lucy Calkins' writing curriculum, we are more than halfway through Unit 3. Students wrote about items they collect or would like to collect. Now, students are writing reviews to interest and persuade their readers in the book, movie, song, game, restaurant, store, or hobby that they are most interested in themselves.
We practice our reading (comprehension and fluency skills) and writing skills during our Guided Reading Centers daily. Last week, students practiced writing sentences with me for two writing tests and wrote a Valentine's Day story that we are hanging up on the tack strips outside our classroom in the hallway. The children also read with stuffed animals and with partners. Students used lined white boards, dry erase markers, and erasers to write the sight words we have learned about so far this school year that are hanging up in the classroom. Students read, listened to, and took reading tests on RAZ Kids stories on their chrome books. The children practiced writing stories utilizing stories in front of them; they had to use correct capitalization, word spacing, spelling, and punctuation.
In Math, the children are starting Unit 6 tomorrow. We will be taking a Pretest and then begin our Everyday Math lessons and Math Centers. We continue to work on addition and subtraction and using number grids (for example: Pick a number. 62. Add ten more. What is your answer? 72). We will start our "Geography" Unit in Social Studies this week. Students will learn about Geography tools (maps, GPS, and an atlas). We also continue to learn about social emotional skills and communication in "Second Step" and working on the 5th Habit in "The Leader in Me" (Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood). In Science we will begin our next unit of opportunities, lessons, and experiments. We will be focusing on living things.
This Thursday, we will celebrate Valentine's Day. This Friday, students will be getting dismissed at 11:30 a.m. (Walkers) and 11:45 a.m. (Bus Riders). Teachers will be in "Leader in Me" training all afternoon; how to align "TLIM" with our teaching. Next Monday, we will not have school due to Presidents' Day. Have a FANTASTIC week!
Sincerely, Mrs. Julie Zimmermann
