Dear Mrs. Zimmermann's First Grade Families,
I hope you are all staying warm in this cold weather we are having. Since we have been having some snow days this week, we will be finishing the lessons next week, along with some new lessons across the curriculum. Stay safe and warm!
Take Care, Mrs. Z : 0 )
Hi and Happy Weekend! The kids and I have still been trying to get over this nasty cold / flu bug. I hope everyone gets some rest and relaxation this weekend. It's hard to believe we're already at the end of January.
This coming week we will be continuing to practice letters, sounds, rhyming, real and nonsense words in Heggerty. We just took our Unit 7 test in Fundations yesterday, so next week we will do writing letters, words, and sentences review before we start Unit 8. Students will continue to listen to me read the first chapter book in the Dragon Slayer's Academy book series.
I completed testing all students in ESGI in Fundation and sight words this past week during Guided Reading Centers. This next week, I will assess students on listening to and answering questions about short stories to check for understanding, forming thoughts, and writing sentences. Students will also practice their reading skills by reading to class stuffed animals and to classroom reading partners. The children will listen to, read, and answer story questions on "RAZ Kids." The kids will be reading and writing short poems and stories.
The students will take part in recess, lunch, gym, music, computers, library, and art classes. We will continue our writing practice in Lucy Calkins in Unit 3 by writing about items we collect. In Everyday Math we will review our addition, subtraction, greater than, less than, equal to, and measuring skills using base 10 blocks, number grids, dice, white boards, dry erase markers, paper, and pencils. Students will be taking their Math Unit 5 Post Test and Unit 6 Pre Test.
In Social Studies, students will complete another "Scholastic News" magazine, continue Unit 4 in "Second Step," and review Habit 4 "Think Win Win" in "The Leader in Me." We will start Habit 5 this Friday, February 1st, "Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood" by hearing a story about listening to others first. In Science, we will continue to learn about our world around us. We will start our next Mystery Science Unit in the next couple weeks.
Just a little F.Y.I., I sent home a paper yesterday about the "Central Trojan Gala" in March. First Grade is creating a Disney basket that will be auctioned off at the gala. Information was sent home in the note and via an email from the school yesterday. I also sent home the January Scholastic Book Order yesterday. Online orders are due by next Wednesday, January 30th.
Have a nice, snowy weekend! Mrs. Zimmermann :)
Hello! I hope you are all enjoying your day. It is always good having an extra day to get some rest and things done around home. It is also nice to think of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how he taught us to treat each other equally. We always speak in our classroom about "The Golden Rule" which is to treat others the way you would want to be treated.
This week the kids will continue working on saying and writing blends, glued sounds, real and nonsense words, sight words, trick words, and sentences. Students will begin listening to a new chapter book and read their Guided Reading leveled books. We will have reading centers to practice reading and writing different types of words and sentences. Children will continue their base 10 math practice with addition and measuring activities and lessons in center time and teacher led math.
We will continue learning about making good choices, being a good leader, and communicating with others in "Second Step" and Habit 4 in "The Leader in Me." We will learn more about our environment and world in Mystery Science Doug videos. We are coming to the end of our second Trimester in the next couple of weeks.
I hope you all enjoy the rest of your day and week. There have been a lot of cold and flu bugs going around. The kids and I have all been sick the past two weeks. I hope everyone feels better soon. Get some rest and take care of yourselves. Mrs. Zimmermann
Hello and Happy Sunday! I hope this finds you all having a great weekend and you are staying warm. The snow is so pretty!
This week we will continue practicing blends, rhymes, glued sounds (ong, ang, ing, ung, onk, ank, ink, and unk), review old and new trick / unit / nonsense / sight words, practice writing letters / words / sentences in our nicest and neatest handwriting, listening to our Junie B. Jones chapter book, practicing our reading and writing skills, working on counting and measuring with base 10 blocks (10s and 1s), continuing to learn about our Fourth Habit "Think Win Win," continue learning about emotions / body language / communication in "Second Step," watching Mystery Science Doug short videos (we finished our "Light and Sound" unit before break), take our Unit 4 Social Studies Test (we finished our "Community Economics" unit), and get assessed on ESGI on Fundation words
Remember, the children will be dismissed early from school this Friday due to a School Improvement Day; teachers will be getting trained more in "Leader in Me." There will be no school next Monday due to Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Have a great week! Mrs. Z :)
Hi there and Happy New Year 2019!
I hope you and your families have had a wonderful and restful holiday break. I enjoyed time with family and friends, went and looked at Christmas lights, enjoyed a slower pace, watched some movies, worked on a puzzle, took some naps, slept in, and enjoyed some time at home with our puppies.
I look forward to seeing the kids on Monday! We will get right back into the swing of things: Heggerty, Fundations, Teacher Led Reading, Guided Reading Centers, Recess, Lunch, Specials, Everyday Math, Math Centers, Social Studies, Science, Second Step, and Leader in Me lessons. Here's to a great 2019 and the last half of this school year! :)
Love, Mrs. Julie Zimmermann
